Point Arena is a fairly large coastal town with a commercial pier and boat launch at Point Arena Cove. There is a small boat ramp to the left of the pier which is suitable for small boat launch, and a small parking lot - no charge for either. The ocean conditions at Point Arena Cove can change very rapidly. As with all dive sites on the California North Coast, keep your eyes open and check ocean conditions frequently. There is a nice restaurant at the cove shopping area, and if the line is not too long, there are restrooms and pay showers on top of the pier on the right hand side.
To get to Arena Cove go to the town of Point Arena south of milepost 15.00. Turn West on Iversen Road and follow it down to the pier and Arena Cove.
The North end of Arena Cove has a very nice protected cove which has a series of small canyons and ridges. The canyons run from North to South, and although they are fairly shallow (to about 30 feet) it is a very scenic and relaxing scuba dive. The area has rockfish and lingcod in plentiful supply. If you decide not to Scuba dive, you can always free dive and get a nice limit of abalone.
The South side of Arena Cove has a very large cliff face which runs from North to South. The waves can really crash on this cliff face. The ocean in front of this cliff runs from about 20 feet to well over 50 feet deep, depending how far you dive from the cliff. This area has an abundance of abalone, rockfish, and lingcod.
There are few boats which have moorings here, since most have moved up to Noyo Harbor at Fort Bragg, but I advise displaying a dive flag in this area. I have never had any close calls with boat traffic in this area, but better safe than sorry.
The decision to dive (or not) is your responsibility. Keep diving activities within your training and comfort level. If you feel more training or experience is needed before attempting a dive, don't dive. Know personal limits, skill levels, and abilities of yourself and your dive buddy. Dive Safely and Dive Often!
