Big River beach is not an actual dive spot, but it is a very accessible and safe launch spot for small inflatables and kayaks. Big River bridge is about 3 miles South of the town of Mendocino at milepost 50.34. Turn East at the North end of the bridge and follow the road down to the beach. There is ample parking on the beach and it is only a small walk to the rivers edge to launch your boat or kayak. As with most spots on the Mendocino Coast, do not leave valuables in your car. This spot seems to be especially notorious for auto break-ins.
After you launch your boat you may go either North or South. I prefer taking a short paddle to the point at the South of Mendocino Bay. If you want to scuba dive just go slightly West of the point and you will be in 60 feet of water with plenty of rockfish and lingcod. If you want to free dive for abalone or spearfish stay inside of "Brewery Gulch" as this cove is called, and you will find comfortable depths of 10 feet to about 30 feet or so. This area may become rough at times, but usually it is diveable. If you opt to go North there are numerous small coves which are usually not frequented due to large waves which are common to the area. On a calm day I would definitely opt for the North option - but be careful - conditions in this area can change in a matter of minutes. Always keep a watchful eye on the ocean for changing conditions.
If you decide to stay in this area overnight there is Van Damme State Campground to the South, and the town of Mendocino to the North with numerous lodgings available. There are also many small private campgrounds in the area.
The decision to dive (or not) is your responsibility. Keep diving activities within your training and comfort level. If you feel more training or experience is needed before attempting a dive, don't dive. Know personal limits, skill levels, and abilities of yourself and your dive buddy. Dive Safely and Dive Often!
