When big ocean storms roll in, this beach gets hit particularly hard!!! The amenities listed in the description below disappeared after the winter storms of December, 2002.

Mackerricher is a very nice diving area for all skill levels. There are picnic tables, showers, and restrooms available at this beach. The area is abundant with rock fish and abalone. If you plan to spend some time here it is a good idea to make reservations for the campground well in advance of your trip, as this is a very popular area. For a small fee reservations to any California state park can be made by calling 1-800-444-7275.

To get to Mackerricher State Park drive North from Fort Bragg on Hwy. 1 until you get to Mendocino milepost 64.90. Turn left into the campground and follow the road to the parking lot at the beach.

This campground is about 5 miles North of Fort Bragg, which is a fairly good sized town with restaurants, a Safeway store, etc. Just ¼ mile South of Highway 20 at Fort bragg is a small dive shop on the West side of the road called "Sub-Surface Progression". The owner Ken knows this area like the back of his hand. The shop is very diver friendly and can supply all of your diving needs while in the area. I prefer the North side of Mackerricher for spear fishing. Rockfish are plentiful and it is not unusual to see a nice ling cod lurking in the kelp or in a hole. The abalone at Mackerricher have been picked over pretty good, but ample limits are possible to any diver with moderate free diving skills.

The decision to dive (or not) is your responsibility. Keep diving activities within your training and comfort level. If you feel more training or experience is needed before attempting a dive, don't dive. Know personal limits, skill levels, and abilities of yourself and your dive buddy. Dive Safely and Dive Often!
