USAL BEACH
(BEACH AND BOAT/KAYAK DIVING)
(SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE TO EXPERT)

The Usal area is difficult to get to, and the diving is for the experienced diver only. The north part of the beach is very rocky and very good for abalone picking, spear fishing, and scuba diving. Usal is commonly referred to as the Southern-most part of the California "Lost Coast".

To get to Usal Beach coming from the south on Hwy. 1, take a sharp left turn onto a gravel road at Mendocino County milepost 90.88. This gravel road is approximately six miles long (seems like more) and very rugged. At the end of the road is a primitive campground with pit toilets. It is more than a day trip and if you decide to try out this location you should plan on camping out for at least a night to make the drive worth your while. Bring in your own food, water, and supplies. Keep in mind this is a primitive campground and primitive camping fees apply. This area may be closed in the winter.

The waters here are usually very rough compared to the coast to the south. Entries from other than the beach can be very steep down a cliff, so bring a rope if you are going to check out pristine beach dive sights. The hiking in this area is very good, and if the waters are too rough to dive you can always go for a hike. The beach is very suitable for small boat or kayak launching and this would be the preferable way to dive this area.

The decision to dive (or not) is your responsibility. Keep diving activities within your training and comfort level. If you feel more training or experience is needed before attempting a dive, don't dive. Know personal limits, skill levels, and abilities of yourself and your dive buddy. Dive Safely and Dive Often!
