LAKE TAHOE - West Shore
Meeks Bay National Forest Campground

(BEACH DIVES) - (SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE TO EXPERT)

The entrance to Meeks Bay National Park Campground is through the park entrance found on the West side of the Lake on Highway 89, north of D. L. Bliss Park. As you approach the entrance there is a pay station and a gate. It currently costs a $5.00 day use fee per vehicle. Drive through the entrance and continue on down to the parking lots in front of the Beach. The campground is actually on the south side of Meeks Bay.

The facilities on the beach include picnic tables, barbecue pits (which may be restricted during the summer), and clean restrooms. The parking lot is less than 50 yards from the beach, so you won't have to lose any weight carrying your gear to the waters' edge.

The bottom of Meeks Bay stays very shallow until you get to the white marker buoys about 100 yards or so off the beach. The buoys are anchored in less than 10 feet of water. This is a good spot to drop to the bottom and begin your dive. I used a compass heading of 240 degrees out, and a reciprocal course of 60 degrees in. This can be a very deep dive if you continue out too far. I quickly hit a depth of 100 feet in less than 5 minutes, and the bottom just kept dropping off at a steep angle. There is little or no granite formations on this dive, just a sandy bottom littered with logs and "crawdads". Watch your depth, and it is recommended that you go no deeper than 96 feet, which is equivalent to 125 feet at sea level.

The decision to dive (or not) is your responsibility. Keep diving activities within your training and comfort level. If you feel more training or experience is needed before attempting a dive, don't dive. Know personal limits, skill levels, and abilities of yourself and your dive buddy. Dive Safely and Dive Often!

For more information call the Meeks Bay Campground at 1(530)573-2600. This campground is small with approximately 40 campsites, and to my knowledge the day use is never restricted during the summer months. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, contact me.
